As children learn to speak, they generally make predictable patterns of sound ‘errors’. These patterns, called phonological processes, are typically gone by a certain expected timeline as children experiment with producing different sounds and become competent in pronouncing the specific sounds.
A Speech Sound Disorder/Delay may be diagnosed when a child has difficulties producing different sounds clearly by an expected age and/or exhibits atypical patterns in speech errors (e.g., lisp).
Signs and Symptoms
If you are concerned or uncertain about your child’s speech development, consider seeking an assessment from a speech therapist. They can help to determine if your child's development is following an appropriate trajectory, advise on the type and severity of your child’s condition and recommend an individualized treatment plan accordingly.
Based on your child’s needs, a Speech Therapist will perform a comprehensive assessment to identify whether your child has a language disorder, the severity of the language disorder and analyze the areas of strengths and needs specific to your child’s language profile. This is usually done through administering a standardized language assessment.
The assessment findings may reveal that your child has a language disorder that affects:

Targets for intervention are selected based on the findings from the assessments conducted. Some areas of intervention include:
Speech Therapists utilizes a range of strategies to assist your child in improving their abilities to use the above language concepts and gain mastery in various skillsets for language construction. It can be thought of as building and/or “repairing” the underlying language structures to result in a more efficient system. This would allow your child to become better at communicating his ideas, and do so in an efficient and meaningful manner. Depending on your child’s age, interests and needs, Speech Therapists will use different activities, toys, materials and/or games to work on the different language targets in the treatment plan.
Stuttering is when the flow of speech is disrupted by
For some, stuttering may also be accompanied by extraneous movements like eye blinking.
Stuttering tends to emerge between the age of 2 to 5 years old. Although natural recovery can occur for some, it is not possible to predict who can recover without any treatment. Research has shown that early intervention is crucial as there is a higher chance of recovery if treatment is initiated before 6 years old.
There are a wide range of evidence-based treatment approaches available across the lifespan. Choice of treatment is dependent on a multitude of factors, such as age, severity, how long an individual has been stuttering etc. Following a comprehensive evaluation, a Speech Therapist would be able to advise on the type of intervention that would be most appropriate for your needs.
Social pragmatics are “social rules” that need to be processed and applied when we interact with others. Being able to use the right words, at the right time and deliver it in an appropriate manner can be challenging. To convey a message, we utilize various aspects of communication. More than just the words we say, we alter our non-verbal language (e.g., eye contact, facial expressions, posture) to signal our intentions. We also flexibly adapt to the social environment and our conversation partners as well. Due to the dynamic nature of social interactions, we also need to process the ‘social cues’ that our conversation partners are sending to us at the same time and make quick adjustments at each moment! Social skills affect our abilities to build meaningful relationships with others. It is also impacts on whether we can regulate our emotions, handle conflicts and successfully collaborate with others.
Social Skills Therapy is available for all ages, may it be for children or adults.
