What are some toys that speech therapists use in their therapy sessions?
Turn-taking games like Pop Up Pirate are commonly used in speech and language therapy sessions for children. Speech therapists use them in individual speech therapy sessions and group therapy sessions (e.g., social skills groups, language therapy groups).
When such toys are used in speech therapy activities, these turn-taking games provide opportunities for kids to practice important social skills (e.g., waiting for their turn to play, joint attention, observing what other kids are doing). These toys can also encourage language use. Your speech therapist may choose specific language goals to work on, such as making requests (e.g., “I want the blue key”) or following instructions.
Not only are these games fun to play with, they can spark conversations among the children. In the process of playing, the children also get to have multiple opportunities to interact with one another. You may notice your child helping others and talking to other children to share their observations. Furthermore, the children also get to practice emotional regulation in these speech therapy sessions when they deal with winning and losing.
Give these turn-taking games a go during playtime, family bonding time or even bring them over for playdates!
